Words not to be confused... law, housing



  • councel - a lawyer giving a legal advice in a court case
  • attorney - laywer representing a client
  • advocate - lawyer who pleads a case on behalf of a client in court
  • solicitor - British lawyer at a lower court
  • barrister - British lawyer at a superior court
  • public prosecutor - government laywer who argues the case against the accused in a criminal trial


  • lodger - someone who pays to live in a house with the person who owns it. The usual American word for roomer.
  • tenant - someone who rents a flat , hoiuse, office, piece of land etc. from the person who owns it.
  • boarder - someone who pays to live in a house as a guest of the family who owns it.
